Psalm 100:4-5

November 25, 2010

In an ideal world, Thanksgiving would be a redundant holiday.

I mean sure, people came up with it to celebrate Pilgrims and Native Americans sharing food and shelter (and disease) and stuff, but today Thanksgiving is viewed as the holiday where we remember and acknowledge the things we have been blessed with (and does anyone really still give thanks for the Pilgrims and stuff anymore?).

In all honesty, however, I feel like most of what the spirit of this holiday encapsulates can be carried out in the day-to-day. It doesn’t take something extraordinary to recognize all the good things we have in life- it’s actually pretty easy to do many of the things we reserve for Thanksgiving every day. Like being glad for life itself every new morning. Like showing our gratitude for the possessions and people around us. Appreciating of our situations, no matter what that situation happens to be. Taking nothing for granted.

Giving thanks.

…I tell myself I should be doing these sorts of things, anyway.

The reality is that I don’t appreciate my friends, my family, my circumstances, etc. nearly as much as I should. That I am, by nature, selfish enough that giving thanks requires conscious effort- and that I’m not alone in this. That, silly as it seems, Thanksgiving might actually be somewhat of a necessity, allowing us to keep the proper perspective on life at least one day out of the year.

Yeah, it’s kind of sad that this sort of thing doesn’t happen every day of the year. But then shouldn’t we be all the more grateful that we have a day dedicated to giving thanks? Shouldn’t we take full advantage of these rare times set apart not only to remember but to celebrate the things we have?

Today we can.

All I know is that if I had a Delorean, I probably wouldn’t waste my time traveling back to the past and trying to fix all the mistakes I’ve made in my life.

I just feel that I’d be much better obliged just reliving days like these over and over again :)

(1) Hello.
Somehow, with us, hello is never just hello.
Or so I imagine.
For us, hello is start. Our beginning. Our ready, set, go.
Because when I say hello to you,
it means I missed you
and I can’t wait
to tell you stories of all the adventures I have been on

since the last time we have talked
(but I want to hear your stories first
because your voice makes me smile)
Hello is our secret.  Our right now. When we say hello
we know we are the only two people in the whole wide world
who get it.
Maybe we will let someone in on the joke someday
but for now we laugh. (it’s more fun this way)
Hello is our future, because when I say hello to you
it means I am glad you are here
and I couldn’t wait another minute because
I am so excited for all the fun we will have
this
year

1) Appreciate. Praise. Be intentional in giving thanks for at least one thing or person a day. Lord knows I take enough things for granted.

2) Take pictures. Make memories. Beautiful is everywhere. Notice.

3) Be patient. With others. With myself. One step at a time is still forward progress.

4) Help people. Volunteer. Remember that effort really doesn’t require that much effort.

5) Smile. Learn. Grow. Live. Laugh. Love. Become somebody I will be proud of on December 31.

6) Floss. I guess.
