Ode to Simple

September 6, 2009

Still perfect.

When I was a kid, sunny days were like casinos for me.

I would drag my best friend out exploring just so we would be outside and all of a sudden I would be so drawn by the allure of the bright light and the blue sky and the vibrant color and sheer aliveness of the world around me that-

-with a smile on my face and without a second thought, I would start to squander all those seconds I had so carefully been saving up and lose myself-

-to the feel of the grass beneath my bare feet while we sang along to the birds and the bugs buzzed a private one note symphony around us-

-or to the sound of the ocean water as we practiced waltzing away just before it could reach us while we frolicked together with the waves in accompaniment to a dance set to our own secret rhythm-

-and as I watched those minutes trickling away as quickly as they had come into my possession, I would catch her grinning at me and I would laugh back and not mind a bit that another day was lost away… because somehow, in those moments as we sat together in the grass on the hill to revel at the sunset or laid back beside each other and tried to master the simple art of stargazing, I would still feel like I had come out on top.

That was back when every discovery made was the discovery of discoveries; back when lazy afternoons were a contradiction since each and every instance spent together ended up producing something worthwhile.

Those days had seemed completely inconsequential, if only because we had just liked it better that way, and had ended up becoming precious commodities that forevermore retain a place in my memories, articles that will last lifetimes stored away as fond recollections, kept pristine and pure and readily available for me to reminisce over, quick to fascinate at every opportunity as I marveled at how different times were then.

How untroubled and uncluttered and untarnished life had been.

How easy. Airy.

Carefree.

Remember those days?
